He was one of the founding members of Tata Teleservices, and now heads marketing at Sasken... and we learnt HR from him!

Currently working on his 2nd PhD in International Master’s in ‘Practising Marketing Management’, Krishnan explains excitedly how any person working with him is most likely to have a book pushed onto them for reading, “If you stop reading, you stop evolving – and in our business, that’s suicidal. I love reading and that’s how I grow...”

Corporate branding, for Sasken, and according to Krishnan, is nothing but “recruitment marketing.” He states with gumption, “Our employees are our greatest branding initiative. I am happy that we have been able to provide them a place where they are able to achieve higher levels in terms of quality of work and essentially pride of work.” Krishnan thumpingly operates on a 3C Model of HR – Character, Commitment and Capability/Competency – while recruiting, selecting and delegating responsibilities. “We at Sasken encourage people who would like to augment their career and skill sets and enhance productivity.” But would that mean allowing them a sabbatical leave to undertake courses away from office, “Of course,” butts in Krishnan, “(but) we would like them to work with us after they have completed their degrees... The key to success of this model is faith and trust.”

Tata group will continue to be one of the largest groups in the country

Both companies now have time till January 30 to revise their bid, after which, Corus shares will be publicly auctioned. A majority of analysts now feel that Tata Steel will find it extremely tough, if not impossible, to beat CSN.

If CSN ends up winning the battle for Corus, it will be yet another strategic setback for Ratan Tata and his group. To be sure, the Tata group will continue to be one of the largest groups in the country. But Ratan Tata would perhaps find some time to contemplate the lessons of Singur, Kalinga Nagar, Idea and Corus. This time, he really can’t say that he will not budge even if a gun is pointed at his head!

And he could rekindle old memories about how virtually ever task handled by him during his early days as the future leader of the Tata group during the 1980s was a fiasco. Wasn’t he the man who wanted consumer electronics company of the Tata group NELCO to be the world leader? Is he still angry at how NELCO was wiped out by competition? Or, does he blame his rivals for it?

CAS’s roll out is near.. A status check!

“Most of the operators are not purchasing any new set top boxes, the ones that we bought three years back are as good as new ones,” says Roop Sharma, President, Cable Operators Federation of India. While some are digging out their old stocks of instruments, others have launched themselves fully into the shopping mode. Zee group’s Siti Cable recently placed an order of two lakh set top boxes to Bharat Electronics Ltd.

With the equipment in place and the deadline nearing, cable operators also face this huge task of getting their customers to adapt to the new way of getting their daily dose of news, action and drama. “MSOs (Multiple System Operator) have launched an intensive door to door campaign to make consumers aware of the benefits of CAS and have begun installing hundreds of set top boxes. Billboards, ads on buses; kiosks; radio; print; TV programmes et al are being used to publicise CAS,” explains Ashok Mansukhani, Executive VP – Corporate Services, Hinduja TMT (INCableNet).

The implementation of CAS might not go down well with broadcasters, and viewers also may have some initial hiccups making space for a set box in their houses. But if all goes well and deadlines are met, CAS may just alter the equation of the Indian telly industry. So watch out!
