“Most of the operators are not purchasing any new set top boxes, the ones that we bought three years back are as good as new ones,” says Roop Sharma, President, Cable Operators Federation of India. While some are digging out their old stocks of instruments, others have launched themselves fully into the shopping mode. Zee group’s Siti Cable recently placed an order of two lakh set top boxes to Bharat Electronics Ltd.
With the equipment in place and the deadline nearing, cable operators also face this huge task of getting their customers to adapt to the new way of getting their daily dose of news, action and drama. “MSOs (Multiple System Operator) have launched an intensive door to door campaign to make consumers aware of the benefits of CAS and have begun installing hundreds of set top boxes. Billboards, ads on buses; kiosks; radio; print; TV programmes et al are being used to publicise CAS,” explains Ashok Mansukhani, Executive VP – Corporate Services, Hinduja TMT (INCableNet).
The implementation of CAS might not go down well with broadcasters, and viewers also may have some initial hiccups making space for a set box in their houses. But if all goes well and deadlines are met, CAS may just alter the equation of the Indian telly industry. So watch out!
